Both University of California Berkeley Cal and California State University Northridge CSUN canceled scheduled games citing that their Universities were not ready to approve a return to club level competitions despite active Athletic programs allowing fan attendance indoors and out.
SJSU was scheduled to open the season at home versus Cal on September 24 for the first of six scheduled bouts between the two clubs. There will be no warm-up games this season as all four remaining matchups will be for conference points. The Spartans were set to play CSUN October 1 and 2 during what would've been the team's first road trip since January of when the team visited University of Oregon.
If a puck is shot over the glass and out of play by a player in their defensive zone, a Delay of Game penalty will be called. Where the issues lie is that before this rule was implemented, players were rarely intentionally shooting it over the glass. Fast-forward to today, this means that players are penalized for an accident or bad luck shooting it over the glass.
Furthering the controversy are all the exceptions that go into this rule. If the puck grazes the glass, goes over the benches, or deflects off another player, it is not a penalty. These are just a few of many exceptions associated with this rule. And depending on the situation, this can make or break an outcome of a game. A great example of another exception was recently seen in the gold medal game, Canada versus Russia, at the most recent World Junior Championship tournament.
Minutes to go in the game, Canada held onto a lead over Russia. Canada would take a penalty late in the game, resulting in a powerplay for Russia. As the video starts, you can see the Canadian player black jersey, right side of the screen attempt to backhand the puck out of his defensive zone. A delay of game penalty in hockey is called when a player purposefully attempts to hold up the game.
The usual punishment for a delay of game is a two-minute minor penalty. A common way to be called for a delay of game penalty is by purposely sending the puck out of the area of play. This is done by players shooting or goalies throwing the puck away.
Another way to cause a delay of game is when a defensive player shoots the puck over the glass in the defensive zone. If this is done intentionally and the puck makes it over the glass without being touched, the player will be called for a delay of game. A more serious delay of game penalty occurs when a goalie knocks the goal out of place and the game has to stop. If this happens when a player is on a breakaway, the player is given a penalty shot. A delayed penalty in hockey is when a penalty is committed by one team but the other team retains possession of the puck.
Until the penalized team touches the puck, game play will continue. For example, if a player is tripped but their team retains possession of the puck, the referee will not stop the game because this would punish the innocent team, especially if they have the opportunity to score. Yes, a team can receive a bench minor penalty from delaying the game. This can happen when too many players from a team enter the game at once.
