Maxtrac 300 manual

Attention Ebay buyers and sellers: If you are buying or selling a MaxTrac, Radius mobile, or GM you need to read the warning on this page. Any Motorola prices mentioned on this page or on any page at this web site should be taken only as a rough guideline.

Prices are changed quarterly, so use the mentioned prices only as a rough indication. If you encounter a large price change on anything where we've mentioned a price we'd appreciate an emailed update. Caution: A lot of the information in the articles below is valid only for MaxTracs and MaxTrac-based Radius radios the Radius mobiles that have the letters LRA in the middle of the model number.

The MaxTracs came first, then when Motorola needed radios to sell as Radius models i. There are some very slight differences, but there is a lot of commonality between the hardware the circuit boards, etc inside the MaxTrac and Radius LRA series mobiles. The later GM series which includes the Radius M10, M and M radios look a lot like the MaxTrac and Radius LRA series, have similar specifications and physical construction, but are actually quite different internally.

There is no Radius or GM series Lab RSS floating around yet so unsuspecting experimenters can turn one of these radios into an expensive brick if not careful. See the GM article below for more details. Click here for a photo. This is definitely not repeater service or any kind of amateur radio service that I'm familiar with! And besides, the rear mounted heat sink does not cool the pin diodes or any other PC-board mounted components. Reducing the transmit power can help, but some models have a minimum rated power level like not less than 25 watts and not more than 45 watts.

You should read this article before any of the other articles here. Some are more equal than others The author does some simple experiments and analysis. The author traced the source and shows several ways to get rid of it.

Here's a collection of frequencies that these radios can generate internally; some of them can be annoying. A lot of the information came from the DeskTrac Service Manual. A follow-up to the article above.

Applies to Radius and MaraTrac radios too. Of course Motorola doesn't want you to twiddle with these, but occasionally it's necessary. They have about a 20 year lifetime, so any radio made prior to about will have this problem and the Dallas chip will need to be replaced. This article tells you what to do about it. This is a companion article to the ones above and below. Should also work with the MaraTrac radios.

This won't work on the 8-channel GM because the firmware won't allow you to reprogram the accessory connector pins for this purpose. You'll need to take it completely apart to clean them. Here's a procedure for doing it. Moto learned their lesson on the channel MaxTrac and artificially limited GM to 16 channels so that they could force anyone needing more than 16 into a Spectra.

Tom walks you through the process with a step-by-step procedure. It has additional notes including a procedure for converting a trunking logic board to conventional. Unfortunately the confusion causes the radio to run the PA deck wide open, which can burn it up. Later I soldered it, inserted it firmly into the notch and it held without falling out.

This is shown below. It is also possible to put a drop of superglue on either side of the soldered wire to help hold the wire in place. I prefer a drop rather than smothering the whole wire with glue, in case the wire needs to be removed at some point.

If your display looks like this, the radio is NOT scanning! The unit will NOT scan without the microphone being "on hook". The radio has 4 different scan modes indicated by dashes next to the labels on the right of the display. If your display is changing between the scan display and the channel number, the radio is "off hook" and not currently scanning.

Scan The channels in this list are set using the Motorola service software. There is no other way to change the frequencies in this list. Priority Scan Same as scan, but the priority channels are checked more often than the regular channels. User Scan The scan list for this mode is set from the front panel of the radio.

Priority User Scan Same as user scan, but it also checks the 2 priority channels more often than the user selected channels. Using the [Up] or [Down] buttons, select the channel you wish to add or remove from the user scan list.

The display will indicate if a channel is in the user scan list by showing a vertical segment in the upper left of the display. Repeat steps 3 to 5. Once you have your desired channels selected just press [Scan] and the display should go back to normal. Now, you can press the [Scan] button to start scanning. Another thing to note is the User Scan channels will stay in the radio until changed.

Loss of power won't clear the list. On Larry's MaxTrac after having programed my chosen channels, all I have to do to initiate scan is to press the [Scan] button. To turn off the [Scan], Larry just presses the scan button again. All the new radios are narrow banded making the MaxTrac obsolete, except for the amateur radio. The 2 red arrows point to the metal parts of the hook that are conductive. The white arrow points to a plastic circle that insulates the two conductive surfaces. Page 4 The operator can also use a regular mic hook as long as it's metal conductive , it should work.

If the mic is not "on hook" and the scan button is pressed, the display will flash between the current channel and the scan mode. Page 5: Scan Modes If your display is changing between the scan display and the channel number, the radio is "off hook" and not currently scanning.
